I can’t tell you the countless emails I get about outsourcing architectural illustration. Outsourcing to China, to India, etc. The terms high quality and low price are always mentioned. But you know what? That doesn’t even interest me and here is why:
For the past 8 years, people have been outsourcing their 3d renderings to other countries. I even had a colleague that had the idea of starting up an architecture firm entirely based on consulting for other architects and then sending it to the Ukraine or something like that. But that idea went south quickly. The first reason is because of the language barrier, neither party spoke the same language so explaining the scope of work was impossible. The second reason was time zones. When we were asleep, they were working and vice versa. Communicating one email often took 12 hours and so the job always took longer and, as you know, in architecture, everything is rush.
I just received and email from a guy asking me if I needed consulting on my architectural illustration. He said he subs out to India so his prices are cheap. So what does he do?? Make a buck off of me? Of course I couldn’t help but reply, I don’t support outsourcing at a time of economic crisis.
I think greed is the main reason that this economy is where it is. So to fix it, shouldn’t we concentrate on using who we have in the United States and not outsource? I have given a break to my clients because its rough out there. But buying a 3d rendering from another country because its ‘cheaper’ and then putting another American our of a job is not the way to stimulate the economy.
I know that there are people out there that read my blog from other countries and I am not trying to offend, I just want to make it out of this messy economy and still be able to do my 3d rendering as a career.

I don’t know where your from, but here in Arizona, we use a lot of stucco. I mean a lot. So its only fitting that we come up with a good stucco texture. I see a lot of renderings out there where the stucco looks dull and lifeless. In the real world, new stucco is [...]

Are we 3d architectural illustrators and 3d renderers no longer chained to our desks or in a cube? I recently purchased the new Alienware M15x. I have to say, I was so tired of working at my desk everyday for hours and even though I miss my large flat panel, I like being mobile better. [...]

I admit, I model in Autocad.. Is this lame. Sometimes people give me that look. The look that “your only modeling in Autocad because you can’t model in 3dsmax.”
That’s not true, I chose to model in Autocad. I come from a generation that autocad was the be all, end all. 3dmax was just this program [...]

I wanted to talk today about photo-realistic entourage. For those of you not familiar with this term, masked images, or textures or 3d compositing. Basically, It is using photorealistic images composited over a 3d rendering or 3d view in Photoshop.
One word. IMAGECELS. I mean seriously, talk about cornering the market. For years I [...]

Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours… Ronald Reagan.
Times are tough right now in the architectural world. No one is building and no one is investing in architecture. You drive down the street and see the four office buildings that have your 3drenderings in front of it, empty. [...]
